The Astrology of Intention

Hello Everyone,

When I want to know the definition of a word, I head to my trustee bookmarked site, Dictionary.com to discover not only the meanings, but the root of the word, its synonyms, and all the various uses of the word throughout time. In preparing to write this post I checked up on the word, Intention, and found it to be sorely lacking for my purposes here today. Here is the definition I found:

in·ten·tion [in-ten-shuhn]

noun

1. an act or instance of determining mentally upon some action or result.

2. the end or object intended; purpose.

3. intentions,

a. purpose or attitude toward the effect of one’s actions or conduct: a bungler with good intentions.

b. purpose or attitude with respect to marriage: Our friends are beginning to ask what our intentions are.

4.  the act or fact of intending.

Blah, Blah, I couldn’t help but notice that the foregoing definition left me feeling less than excited about a word that carries with it a connotation of such import. And, based on the sounding of the word – in tension – I couldn’t help but feel like there was something uneasy about this word. So I thought about the word, its meaning, its “purpose” and came up with what I deemed a much better definition for today:

Intention: “A creation brought into being by purposeful attention and direction of thought; An ongoing process of bringing something desired into being.”

Being the Astrologer that I am, these musings about the word intention led me to wonder just how someone’s unique astrology could help them deliver “intentions” that are in alignment with their Soul and their Destiny. Not that everything someone would want to create through intentions should always be run through the filter of the soul and its purpose, but when we combine intention with the deep down desire of our Soul, manifesting somehow becomes more powerful and more synchronicities appear in our lives that move us toward our goal in a more profound way.

From an astrological viewpoint, there are a couple of distinct things that we could look at in a natal chart that show the way toward an individual soul’s “Intentions”. First would be the Sun. The Sun in your chart is the indicator of the Personality that you chose to incarnate with – the archetype or vehicle, if you will, that your Soul chose to experience itself through. It gives us the broadest vision of what you are here to do. For example, I am a Gemini. Gemini is known as the Communicator of the Zodiac, the Thinker, and the Flirt. There is a Soul desire here to express oneself, pass on knowledge, share ideas and have fun with all types of people. I know from experience that my soul sings when I am in teacher mode, or when I am engaged in lively discussions with people about any topic of interest, and my friends and acquaintances come from many walks of life.

The next piece we could look at is the North Node, also known as the Dragon’s Head or Destiny. The North Node along with the South Node comprise an axis that point to the growth area for the individual soul (North Node), and the gifts and experiences brought forward into this lifetime (South Node). Looking at the qualities embodied by the sign and the house that both the North Node and South Node are in gives a much clearer picture of the evolutionary intention of your soul. Using just these three points (Sun, North Node, South Node) astrologers can get a pretty clear picture of just what you (your soul) are here to accomplish.

The Moon is a very powerful tool for us in terms of manifesting our desired intentions. The moon marks time in cycles and astrologically there are specific times of the month when setting intentions has a special power or magic available to it. The New Moon (astrologically the time when the Sun and Moon are conjunct, or occupying the same astrological degree of the sky) has always characterized a time of the month for beginning something and as such is definitely the intention setting marker for cyclic manifestation. Consciously connecting to the New Moon’s placement in your personal chart assures you that energetically you are creating in alignment with your soul’s desire.

The Full Moon (astrologically the time that the Moon and Sun are in opposition to each other) is also helpful in getting our intentions manifested. As the New Moon is about beginnings, the Full Moon is about completion. It is the “letting go” part of the Moon cycle. I find the Full Moon to be very powerful in helping me clarify the things that are not helping me manifest my desires – for example letting go of fears, blocks, limiting thoughts and beliefs. The Full Moon time of the month is important then in allowing us to let go of the things that may stand in our way of manifesting our desires from the New Moon.

As it so happens, the upcoming Full Moon occurs February 7 @1:54 p.m. PST in the sign of Aquarius-Leo (the Sun will be in Aquarius the Moon in Leo). Aquarius happens to be the ruling sign for the 11th House of a zodiac chart which is the house of Manifesting our Vision, Hopes, Aspirations and yes, Intentions and Leo rules the 5th House of Creativity, Joy, Play and Risk-taking. That means, we all have a very special opportunity coming to really see our perceived limitations and fears as the blocks to our soul’s desires and intentions, release them and prepare for the new moon later on this month, which will be in the very creative sign of Pisces (more on the New Moon in Pisces in a later post).

There is so much more in a chart or in astrology itself that I could go into here as it relates to setting intentions and discovering our Soul’s desires. I’m sure I could share these in future articles and posts. However, there is one other thing that I would like to share with you. Why, for example, was I musing about intentions at all? Well, it all started with a post that my friend Kony Dengel sent out earlier this week on her blog, Embracing our True Magnificence . She is calling us to create our intentions for 2012 by asking some very interesting questions and while reading her post it occurred to me that some people might be confused as to “what” they really wanted to create. I know I was. In fact, I was paralyzed by the thought of responding to her post! What does my soul yearn for this year? What creation would serve my soul’s continuing evolution? I checked my own chart and looked at the Sun, North Node, South Node and then things began to become clearer for me. I could look at my chart, see my progression of life and feel from the very depths of my soul, what it was that I wanted to create. Whew! That was close! I wouldn’t have wanted to disappoint myself or my friend by not participating in this wonderful exercise!

If you too find yourself in a confused state over what your soul’s purpose, destiny or desire is, please don’t wait another minute! Call me or email me and we can schedule time for a personalized reading of your Destiny. There is no time like the present to connect to your Soul!!

Blessings to all,

I thought this was interesting in light of Christianity’s perception that astrology is anathema to their beliefs.  Why would a picture like this be painted in a cathedral?  Easy… because in older times, astrology was recognized as a Godly science:)

2012 Astrological Highlights

Hello Everyone,

Now that Christmas is behind us, it’s time to take a look at what the new year may bring us in terms of the astrological transits that will be in effect.  Today I’m going to deal with what I consider to be the top 3 astro events for 2012:

1.  Mars retrograde cycle

2.  Venus transit across the Sun

3.  Uranus/Pluto square

Mars Retrograde

Mars will begin its 80 day retrograde cycle on January 24, 2012 at 23 Virgo and return to Direct motion on April 14, 2012 at 3 Virgo.  So wherever Virgo is in your personal chart is where you are likely to see the effects of the retrograde.

Mars is the energy of action, forward motion, conflict and aggression/assertiveness.  A retrograde planet always turns the energy of that planet to more inward focus.  With Mars in retrograde motion then,  we can expect that we will be more inclined to inner work than outer work, that we may feel inner conflict and be more apt to be passive aggressive than outright aggressive.

Virgo is a sign that is Practical, Analytical, Organized, Critical, and Perfection-seeking.  While Mars is in this part of our charts we can expect some very down to Earth accomplishments and actions, but during the retrograde we will have to watch out for tendencies to be finicky, nit-picky or too critical of ourselves, others and the projects we may be working on.  It is always a good idea to have an eye towards perfection, but taken to an extreme can lead us to not achieve anything.  This will be a great time for using our critical analysis abilities toward perfecting something in our lives – just resist the urge to tear it all down because of one little imperfection.

Venus Transit Across the Sun

Venus is probably the most interesting planet in our solar system.  Did you know that her surface temps are hotter than that of Mercury?  And she’s not even as close to the Sun as Mercury is.  She is also the only planet that revolves clockwise on her axis.  Did you also know that Venus subscribes a perfect Pentagram in her orbital relationship with Earth?  The Ancients knew this just from their observations of her complete cycle – and because she was such a dominant feature in the sky and predictable as to whether or not she was a morning star or evening star – the Pentagram became an important symbol to the early Earth/Nature religions.  It wasn’t until the time of Christianity overcoming the Pagan religions that the symbol became one that was fraught with the negative connotations that we know of today

In June of 2004 Venus moved between the Earth and the Sun and her form was visible moving over the face of the Sun.  This particular transit is a rare one occurring only every 121 years or so, and always comes in pairs spaced 8 years apart and always occurs in the sign of Gemini or Sagittarius.  The first of the pair occurred on June 8, 2004 at 18 Gemini and the second will occur on June 5-6, 2012 at 16 Gemini.  Venus in astrology has rulership over Relationships, Harmony, Beauty, the Arts, and Money.  Gemini is a sign of Communication,Commerce and Networking.

If we look back over time at some of the changes that took place on the planet during or just after these Venus transits, we may be able to discern the direction this pair may be taking us:

1519 & 1526 – Magellan sails around the world proving that the Earth is not flat.  Serious changes in our worldview come about because of this

1631 & 1639 – Mail service begins in Denmark and Sweden; the first printing press in the American colonies

1761 & 1769 – Astronomers observe and share information in the 1st cooperative communication project on a global scale; conditions were forming that would lead to the American Revolution

1874 & 1882 – Explosion of information sharing including newspaper, telephone, telegraph; the Panic of 1873 creates what is now known as the “Long Depression” and silver is no longer used to back our money in the US.

2004 – USA Today reports, “The long-term economic health of the United States is threatened by $53 trillion in government debts and liabilities that start to come due in four years (2008, which is when our current economic recession began – my words here) when baby boomers begin to retire.”; cell phone usage begins to overtake landline usage

I cannot even imagine where we will go from here in the communication fields – perhaps to telepathic communication or conversing with beings from the stars.  But, it’s very obvious that these Venus transits have had an effect upon the economy/currency through the years.  Might the upcoming transit sound the death knell to an economy that is long past its prime?  We might even be able to explore options to the current economy – is a form of barter economy in the offing?  Only time will tell as this Venus transits completes its work.

Uranus-Pluto Square (90 degree)

Uranus and Pluto have been two of the power players in astrology in 2011.  You only have to look at the major Earth changes, weather patterns, and toppled governments to see what effect these two can have on the world.  In 2012 they continue working their magic by forming a stressful 90 angle to each other called a square.

Uranus rules Revolution, Change, Freedom and the Unexpected!  And, with Uranus in Aries (ruled by Mars) expect New Beginnings, Innovation, Independence, Rash Actions.  Pluto rules Death/Rebirth (aka Transformation), Power and the Shadow side of anything, and while Pluto is in Capricorn expect the underbelly of large institutions like the Government, Corporations, Systems like HealthCare, the Economy and the Military to have their faults and shortcomings exposed.  Uranus and Pluto in square work together to destroy, expose and rebirth something new and possible exciting – a new paradigm!

Because these two planets are so far away from Earth, their effects tend to be more generational than personal.  However, each of us is undergoing our own Transformation with this transit based on their placements in our charts.  I’ve seen and talked to a number of people who are experiencing a lot of turmoil in their lives recently, and I remind each of them that this all a part of their movement toward a personal “New Paradigm”.

Happy 2012 to all of you and I’m looking forward to an exciting New Year!!!

The 12 Days of Christmas

The 12 Days of Christmas

Tonight at 9:36 p.m. PST is officially the Winter Solstice, the shortest day of the year for us in the Northern Hemisphere and the first day of Winter. For the next 3 days the Sun holds steady in its furthest southern declination prompting our ancient ancestors to wonder whether the Sun would ever return to the North.  Right on schedule, December 25th, the Sun makes its first measurable move toward the North once more – the Sun King is reborn – which is one of the reasons why we celebrate Christmas with lights and candles. Even more interestingly, the constellation Virgo – the Virgin – hangs at the eastern horizon at sunrise on December 25th reminding us that the Sun King is reborn from a Virgin on Christmas Day. Amazing how Christianity imprinted itself over some very ancient beliefs isn’t it?

The night between December 24 and 25th is the most Holy of Nights – not necessarily for the religious reasons imparted by the dawn of Christianity, but for the recognition that a time-honored cycle of time was about to repeat itself – the return of the light and longer days.

The next day, December 26th begins the 12 Days of Christmas. This was considered a very festive time in our past and many parties and celebrations occurred. At one time in history it was even decreed that no one could work for the 12 days – that is except for the Bakers and Cooks. I’m all for a return to some old traditions, with the added update of 12 days paid vacation:)

The elders, priests and spiritual leaders also considered the 12 Days of Christmas to be a sacred time for prophecy. Through meditation and careful observation of the events on each of the “Days”, they could predict events that would likely happen during each of the astrological time periods to come in the year. For example, December 26th was equated with Aries which would be the time period from March 21 to April 19, and so on throughout the 12 Days.

For the last several years I have personally participated in this process by keeping careful journal notes on my dreams, observations, feelings, insights, synchronicities, world events, or anything else that caught my attention. It was very interesting to go back through my journal entries as each time period came up to see what might be the likely events I would see in the world or in my personal life. And, even more exciting is that there was a definite correlation between my journaled observations and actual events that happened during the zodiac time I journaled for.

In case you want to try it this year, and of course I suggest you do, here is a chart that equates each day of the 12 Days with its proper zodiac sign and time period. Enjoy!

December 26 = Aries time of year – March 21 to April 19

December 27 = Taurus time of year – April 20 to May 20

December 28 = Gemini time of year – May 21 to June 20

December 29 = Cancer time of year – June 21 to July 22

December 30 = Leo time of year – July 23 to August 22

December 31 = Virgo time of year – August 23 to September 22

January 1 = Libra time of year – September 23 to October 22

January 2 = Scorpio time of year – October 23 to November 21

January 3 = Sagittarius time of year – November 22 to December 21

January 4 = Capricorn time of year – December 22 to January 19

January 5 = Aquarius time of year – January 20 to February 18

January 6 = Pisces time of year – February 19 to March 20

May all your holidays be merry and bright no matter how you celebrate them in your family!

Blessings,

Janet

Eclipses

Full Moon Lunar Eclipse

December 10, 2011

6:36 a.m. PST @ 18 Gemini

There are no more awe-inspiring and fear evoking astronomical occurrences than solar and lunar eclipses.  Throughout history eclipses have been greeted with dread, doom and gloom.  I’m sure that we could find many things that happened during eclipses that have given it this reputation including deaths of the mighty and the bringing down of civilizations, essentially a changing of the guard in the larger world we live in.  But for us as individuals, are eclipses something that should inspire fear?

My fascination with eclipses comes not from just where they are occurring today, but from their placement in our charts during our time in utero.  The eclipses that we experience pre-birth imbue us with their energies and are important indicators in our process toward achieving our destinies.  A reading of the pre-natal Solar Eclipse shows us what we are here on the Earth to teach.  Indeed, it even shows us the responsibility that we undertook to forward the collective consciousness of the planet.  It shows your promise to the universe and in return by teaching others you are bringing a balance to your own karmic scales.  A reading of the Pre-natal Lunar Eclipse in your chart shows the lessons that you came here to learn.  It is the lesson(s) of the soul and what it needs or desires in order to evolve.

Earlier this week I decided to try out the Pre-natal eclipse reading with a couple of friends because this is something that I haven’t used in readings for the last several years.  Who knows why I stopped working with this information, but it seems that now is the time to bring this useful tool back into my toolbox.  So, I called one of my friends and began relating her pre-natal eclipses to her.  The response was incredible – first of all, I realized right away what the impact was going to be for her as she has been wondering about whether or not she was on her right path – but the information I was giving to her was so amazing that I could hear the emotion and tears in her voice as she related to me how freeing this was for her; to realize once and for all that she was following a path laid before her by her own soul.  It was incredibly validating for me as well because I know where my eclipses are and I know what I am here to share and teach, and in that moment sharing with my friend, I knew for certain ( in that deep down body way of knowing) that I was on my path as well!  But, one person’s chart does not tell the whole story.  So, I recruited other friends and clients to work through their eclipses with me.  And, unbelievably a pattern is emerging about the importance of the prenatal eclipses and how “freeing” this information is for everyone.

The timing of these realizations couldn’t be more right on either.  The current eclipse pattern is in Sagittarius (truth-seeking, freedom loving) and Gemini (honest communication, working with change) – both are mutable signs, meaning the energy of change, flexibility, adaptability.  The transiting North Node (destiny) has been in Sagittarius since the beginning of 2011 and the eclipse pattern in force since last December – so we are all being asked to live our “truth” and seek to free ourselves from anything that is not authentic to our own spiritual or soul paths.  Each of you can probably relate to this information in your own lives as well.  Any place where you have noticed that you’re stuck or where you can no longer deal with the situation, person, job in its current state are being effected by this current astrological pattern as well.  The energy of change is upon us all – just look at the world we are living in right now – how willing are you to make the necessary adjustments to bring yourself into alignment with your destiny and soul’s desire?

Perhaps change isn’t just about our willingness to participate but our knowingness of the direction in which we are being asked to move? Am I on my “Path” or have I lost sight of it?  Are the changes I’m experiencing a part of my soul’s grand plan?   If you are asking yourself these types of questions, then I have a great offer for you.  From now until the end of December I would like to offer each of you a reading of your Pre-Natal Solar and Lunar Eclipse patterns for only $25!  This reading makes a great Christmas gift for loved ones and friends as well.  Contact me either by email at janethickox@hotmail.com or via telephone (360)399-1122 to schedule your consult today!

Happy Eclipse!

The Beginning

Life is so interesting….

Last weekend I was sitting at the table with Facebook open on my laptop, my husband sitting at the same table playing a game on his laptop, when all of a sudden I got the urge to yell out, ” I want to write!”  I actually didn’t yell it out at all, but the feeling that this evoked in me was so strong and so sudden that I couldn’t leave it alone!  And, in an interesting synchronicity, just after that feeling came over me I saw a dear friend online and began chatting with her about the New Moon.  Out of the blue she says to me, “So, when are you going to start writing Janet?”  I was totally blown away – Really?  Did she just say that to me?  The way I see things, is that when the universe begins to show you something in more than one way, then it is definitely time to sit up and take notice!  And, usually I get it 3 times – no that’s not me being superstitious  – that’s just been my experience in the world – it’s like getting a knock on the door 3 times and you know for sure it’s time to answer!

Like any good astrologer would do, I turned to my own chart to see if I could divine what was going on.  And, like usual, looking at my own chart was like looking at a piece of writing in Greek.  I’m just not objective enough to see the truth in my own chart.  But, another synchronicity was occurring that would shine a light on this for me and that is the Part of Fortune came into my awareness.  Why it came up I really don’t know, but I ended up researching my own POF’s placement, and guess where it was?  In the 3rd house of Communication – writing, speaking, teaching, etc.!  There is a sort of funny back story to this as well.  For the longest time I had the wrong birth time for myself, so everything in my chart looks different now that I have the correct time (right from my birth certificate) including the POF which was in my 4th house based on the erroneous birth time.  So, while the 4th house of Home, Family, Tradition placement made some sense to me, it didn’t really create an aha moment for me.  But the 3rd house…The pieces were starting to fall into place!

There are some specific things that fascinate me with Astrology and those are the things that I want to write about.

Here are some of the subjects I will be covering in this blog:

1.  Destiny – as shown through the North Node and South Node of the moon.  This tends to show the soul’s path and evolution.

2.  The Lunation Cycle – basically the cycles of the moon as it relates to our individual charts.

3.  Part of Fortune – shows where we can find our “pot of gold” or derive joy from.  It is a mathematical correlation between the Sun, Moon and Ascendant in a chart.

4.  Black moon Lilith – a point arising from the void created in the moon’s path around the ecliptic.  In short, Lilith is a dark place within each of us, a repository of our shadow that we dare not look at lest we have to come to terms with in within ourselves.

5.  Eclipses – solar and lunar eclipses and their effects in each of our charts.

6.  Current Events as they relate to astrological configurations unique to our times

7.  Anything else of a mystical, astrological or interesting topic that I want to share.

I also believe that blogs should be interactive – that most of the fun of blogging is to have discussion between the readers and the writer.  To that end, I want to know what you as readers want to hear and learn about astrology.  Is there a topic or a question that you would like answered?  If so, please let me know by commenting on the posts.

My intention is that this blog will be updated weekly on Wednesdays, but I reserve the right to write more or less depending upon the circumstances in the stars above us.  Until next week!
