One Way to Learn Astrology

I am in the process of re-developing my website and my astrology business.  Part of that development lies in doing a whole lot of writing that I hadn’t anticipated doing – Package descriptions, Free content, About me, an e-book, etc.  It has left me very little time to write on the blog, so I thought I would share here some of the things that I’m working on behind the scenes of my new site.

One of the first pieces I had to write was a bio.  I already had a bio that I was using, but it really didn’t convey much about how I came to learn astrology and numerology.  So, what I’m sharing below is a sneak peak to the About Me page from my website – Enjoy!

When I was 19 years old I was walking through a bookstore in Orange, CA when a set of books caught my attention. The books were Matthew Goodwin’s books “Numerology: The Complete Guide, Vol. I and Vol. 2. I was making very little money at the time and there were two books in the set and they were $20 each, but I couldn’t pass them up so I purchased them. Later that day I sat reading those books, and discovered how much I loved this subject. Before long I was practicing numerology on friends and family and soon I could do complete readings for people just based on their birth dates and their names at birth. It was quite the revelation, but nothing prepared me for what was going to occur some 20 years later…

My path to becoming an astrologer did not come in the usual way, and it requires a bit of an open mind in order to understand. In fact, you could say there was magic in the way I came to have this knowledge. The usual path learning any skill including astrology would be through years of study and becoming accredited through some astrological organization…But I remembered astrology!

One day 10 years ago, my then 9 year old son, was rummaging through a box of free stuff left over from a neighbor’s garage sale, and he found a book. He brought the book home to me because there were some pictures of crystals on the cover and he knew I loved rocks and crystals. I rather mindlessly looked at the cover and read the title, “Chiron: Rainbow Bridge Between the Inner and Outer Planets” by Barbara Hand Clow, thanked my son, and promptly put the book in the bookcase for later reading.

The next day I came home from work and that book was on the floor in front of my bookcase. I thought it was odd, but since I had two dogs, I figured one of them hit the shelf or the book with their tail and knocked it down – no big deal! I put the book back on the shelf and went about my business.

The next evening I came home from work and found that same book on the nightstand in my bedroom. I asked all four of my kids if any of them had put the book in my room, but none of them had. I then asked my husband when he got home if he had done it, and he had not. This was getting weirder, but I still did not open that book.

Finally, later on that same evening I went to my room to put away some laundry and there was that book, on my bed and opened! Now I don’t know about most of you, but when something like that happens – especially 3 times – I take notice! I calmly put my clothes away and sat down to read that book!

I was only a few pages into the book when I realized it was about an obscure planet discovered in 1979 called Chiron, and that the book was about Chiron’s astrology. I was hooked! I couldn’t put that book down and I quickly absorbed everything there was to know about Chiron and then went to the internet for more. Over the next days and weeks I went to several internet astrology sites, and each time I read something new about any planet, or a chart, or the houses of the chart, it felt like I was just remembering everything from some time in the past. Only I had never studied astrology before. I began to do charts for my friends and family and they were all astounded at how much I knew and were even more impressed when I related this story to them. Needless to say, at some time in the past, and most likely in some lifetime past I was an astrologer, and reading the book only opened me up to remembering that long ago learned information, and I only had to take a refresher course to enable me to use it. It has been the biggest blessing and the biggest lesson for me. How? Well, in my mind at the time, you didn’t just remember something as complicated and information laden as astrology. In fact, you had to study for years before you would become proficient at any skill. But, my paradigm has changed since then, I accept that I came here with this knowledge and I remembered it at a key point in my life when it was time for me to use what I knew – and I’ve been using it ever since! I encourage everyone who has ever had any experience like this to share with others – because it truly opens us up to the prospect of something mystical, wonderful and even magical that can happen in our lives and in our world.

The Astrology of Intention

Hello Everyone,

When I want to know the definition of a word, I head to my trustee bookmarked site, Dictionary.com to discover not only the meanings, but the root of the word, its synonyms, and all the various uses of the word throughout time. In preparing to write this post I checked up on the word, Intention, and found it to be sorely lacking for my purposes here today. Here is the definition I found:

in·ten·tion [in-ten-shuhn]

noun

1. an act or instance of determining mentally upon some action or result.

2. the end or object intended; purpose.

3. intentions,

a. purpose or attitude toward the effect of one’s actions or conduct: a bungler with good intentions.

b. purpose or attitude with respect to marriage: Our friends are beginning to ask what our intentions are.

4.  the act or fact of intending.

Blah, Blah, I couldn’t help but notice that the foregoing definition left me feeling less than excited about a word that carries with it a connotation of such import. And, based on the sounding of the word – in tension – I couldn’t help but feel like there was something uneasy about this word. So I thought about the word, its meaning, its “purpose” and came up with what I deemed a much better definition for today:

Intention: “A creation brought into being by purposeful attention and direction of thought; An ongoing process of bringing something desired into being.”

Being the Astrologer that I am, these musings about the word intention led me to wonder just how someone’s unique astrology could help them deliver “intentions” that are in alignment with their Soul and their Destiny. Not that everything someone would want to create through intentions should always be run through the filter of the soul and its purpose, but when we combine intention with the deep down desire of our Soul, manifesting somehow becomes more powerful and more synchronicities appear in our lives that move us toward our goal in a more profound way.

From an astrological viewpoint, there are a couple of distinct things that we could look at in a natal chart that show the way toward an individual soul’s “Intentions”. First would be the Sun. The Sun in your chart is the indicator of the Personality that you chose to incarnate with – the archetype or vehicle, if you will, that your Soul chose to experience itself through. It gives us the broadest vision of what you are here to do. For example, I am a Gemini. Gemini is known as the Communicator of the Zodiac, the Thinker, and the Flirt. There is a Soul desire here to express oneself, pass on knowledge, share ideas and have fun with all types of people. I know from experience that my soul sings when I am in teacher mode, or when I am engaged in lively discussions with people about any topic of interest, and my friends and acquaintances come from many walks of life.

The next piece we could look at is the North Node, also known as the Dragon’s Head or Destiny. The North Node along with the South Node comprise an axis that point to the growth area for the individual soul (North Node), and the gifts and experiences brought forward into this lifetime (South Node). Looking at the qualities embodied by the sign and the house that both the North Node and South Node are in gives a much clearer picture of the evolutionary intention of your soul. Using just these three points (Sun, North Node, South Node) astrologers can get a pretty clear picture of just what you (your soul) are here to accomplish.

The Moon is a very powerful tool for us in terms of manifesting our desired intentions. The moon marks time in cycles and astrologically there are specific times of the month when setting intentions has a special power or magic available to it. The New Moon (astrologically the time when the Sun and Moon are conjunct, or occupying the same astrological degree of the sky) has always characterized a time of the month for beginning something and as such is definitely the intention setting marker for cyclic manifestation. Consciously connecting to the New Moon’s placement in your personal chart assures you that energetically you are creating in alignment with your soul’s desire.

The Full Moon (astrologically the time that the Moon and Sun are in opposition to each other) is also helpful in getting our intentions manifested. As the New Moon is about beginnings, the Full Moon is about completion. It is the “letting go” part of the Moon cycle. I find the Full Moon to be very powerful in helping me clarify the things that are not helping me manifest my desires – for example letting go of fears, blocks, limiting thoughts and beliefs. The Full Moon time of the month is important then in allowing us to let go of the things that may stand in our way of manifesting our desires from the New Moon.

As it so happens, the upcoming Full Moon occurs February 7 @1:54 p.m. PST in the sign of Aquarius-Leo (the Sun will be in Aquarius the Moon in Leo). Aquarius happens to be the ruling sign for the 11th House of a zodiac chart which is the house of Manifesting our Vision, Hopes, Aspirations and yes, Intentions and Leo rules the 5th House of Creativity, Joy, Play and Risk-taking. That means, we all have a very special opportunity coming to really see our perceived limitations and fears as the blocks to our soul’s desires and intentions, release them and prepare for the new moon later on this month, which will be in the very creative sign of Pisces (more on the New Moon in Pisces in a later post).

There is so much more in a chart or in astrology itself that I could go into here as it relates to setting intentions and discovering our Soul’s desires. I’m sure I could share these in future articles and posts. However, there is one other thing that I would like to share with you. Why, for example, was I musing about intentions at all? Well, it all started with a post that my friend Kony Dengel sent out earlier this week on her blog, Embracing our True Magnificence . She is calling us to create our intentions for 2012 by asking some very interesting questions and while reading her post it occurred to me that some people might be confused as to “what” they really wanted to create. I know I was. In fact, I was paralyzed by the thought of responding to her post! What does my soul yearn for this year? What creation would serve my soul’s continuing evolution? I checked my own chart and looked at the Sun, North Node, South Node and then things began to become clearer for me. I could look at my chart, see my progression of life and feel from the very depths of my soul, what it was that I wanted to create. Whew! That was close! I wouldn’t have wanted to disappoint myself or my friend by not participating in this wonderful exercise!

If you too find yourself in a confused state over what your soul’s purpose, destiny or desire is, please don’t wait another minute! Call me or email me and we can schedule time for a personalized reading of your Destiny. There is no time like the present to connect to your Soul!!

Blessings to all,

Janet Hickox
